HOW WOULD YOU KNOW …
If your child has been or is being sexually abused? Do you know the signs or indicators that may indicate sexual abuse?
While one sign alone may not indicate that your child is being sexually abused, several behavioral and/or physical signs may indicate just that.
Pay attention to the following:
BEHAVIOR INDICATORS
- Sudden changes in personality (irritability, depression, withdrawal, clinginess)
- Inappropriate sex play or knowledge for their developmental stage
- Regressive behaviors – bedwetting, baby talk
- Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed
- Sudden change in school performance
- Suicidal behavior
- Sudden development of fears
PHYSICAL INDICATORS
- Torn, stained bloddy underclothing
- Bleeding or discharge from the genitals
- Venereal disease or pregnancy
- Difficulty sitting or walking
- Frequent yeast or urinary infections
Many children are afraid to tell that they are being sexually abused or do not know how to tell. They may make vague statements or drop hints. This may be their way of disclosing the abuse.
SOME TYPICAL STATEMENTS OF DISCLOSURE
- He hurts me.
- Uncle “so and so” does things to me that I don’t like.
- I’m afraid to go home.
